Autumn Conference Party Political Broadcast - "I Can Make a Difference"
1 - 30 Sep 2009The Festivals Company created a party election broadcast for Plaid Cymru, which was used to launch their autumn conference and was broadcast on BBC Cymru Wales, S4C, and ITV Wales. The broadcast was shot in high definition using the Canon 5D Mark 2.
"Our brief from the client was to readdress a number of misconceptions about the party and launch their new slogan for the general election campaign. To achieve this we devised an ambitious visual concept, which would involve the voice of Plaid being projected onto buildings throughout Cardiff. We thought this would be a more interesting way of communicating the messages as opposed to the more traditional format of someone directly addressing the camera lecturing the audience" said James from The Festivals Company.
"For reasons already widely discussed, the perception of certain politicians and political parties has been tarnished this year, so we wanted to create something that was more positive, and similar to the previous broadcasts we had created for Plaid, focused on members of the general public. For the end of the broadcast we wanted to create a sort of mantra of positivity by having all the participants say the line "I can make a difference". It was a risky move because if we got it wrong we knew it might come across as a poor facsimile of an Obama presidential advert. However, in the end, we’re confident that the film captures a portrait of contemporary Wales and introduces the new Plaid slogan in visually interesting and engaging way" said Festivals Company Managing Director Berwyn Rowlands.
"From the outset, we knew that this concept was our most ambitious yet, and we quickly assembled a team that could help us achieve it. Shooting on the Canon 5D Mark 2 was a brave move as it’s essentially a stills camera and to the best of our knowledge we hadn’t seen any examples of material shot on the camera broadcast on TV. However, the end product looks absolutely fantastic, and the client is delighted with the film, so the risk definitely paid off" added James.
