New Festival!

4 Feb 2010

The Festivals Company have announced the programme for the Pierhead Sessions. The inaugural event, produced by The Festivals Company for the National Assembly for Wales Commission, promises to bring together the sharpest minds to focus on issues that affect you, Wales and the world.

The 3 day festival takes place in the Pierhead Building located opposite the Senedd building in Cardiff Bay. The iconic building is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Wales and is seen nightly as a backdrop to news bulletins on ITV and the BBC.

"The Pierhead Sessions is one of our most ambitious projects since our inception four years ago. It has challenged our skills in programming, marketing and infrastructure and brings together areas of expertise and interest within the Festivals Company covering politics, food, media and entertainment. The enthusiastic response to the programme has been very encouraging. Feedback about the dedicated festival website, created with Sequence, has also been very positive" said Berwyn Rowlands from the Festivals Company.

Festival highlights include The 2050 Cookbook session, which will examine what we will be eating in 2050. Although today’s celebrity chefs are already addressing issues of sourcing local ingredients and seasonality, there’s a danger that the general public doesn’t recognise the impact that production, distribution and sustainability will have on what we eat in the future. A new food equation is taking shape and it carries profound consequences for every country in the world.

The festival’s keynote speech will be given by George Monbiot who will give his views on the outcome of the Copenhagen summit for the world. He will also discuss how we can develop a more sustainable future over the next decade. The lecture will be introduced by Jane Davidson AM, the Minister for the Environment, Sustainability and Housing.

As the eleventh Doctor prepares to make his debut this spring, Made in Wales: Doctor Who, in collaboration with BBC Cymru Wales, will examine the success of Doctor Who and the impact it has had in Cardiff, Wales and beyond. The session will also look forward to the new season of Doctor Who under the stewardship of Piers Wenger and the new Doctor, Matt Smith.
