Curry House 2010!

24 Nov 2009

The hottest competition in Wales returns!

Chefs across Wales are preparing to tantalise your taste buds, seduce your senses and pamper your palettes as they compete to become Welsh Curry House of the Year 2010.

The search is now on to see who will win the coveted award, now in its forth year, with more than 240 Indian restaurants in Wales eligible to compete.

"North and West Wales have come up tops for the past three year winning the prestigious title. I think there is a huge expectation that a South Wales based restaurant might win in 2010. However that decision rests initially with the Welsh public," said Berwyn Rowlands from the Festivals Company who are organising the competition.

Speaking at yesterday’s competition launch at Kareems – The Restaurant in Rhyl, he added: "People who eat out in Indian restaurants in Wales have seen how the sector has been transformed over the past 10 years. A night out at the local curry house is now a fashionable and sophisticated evening of fine food."

"Winning the Welsh Curry House of the Year award was a fantastic start to 2009. The award ceremony in Cardiff was very exciting I felt very proud for my family and everybody who had voted for us," said Sid Ghani winner of the Welsh Curry House of the Year 2009 competition.

"It’s been fantastic since we won the award and during the year we opened our second restaurant on Station Road, Colwyn Bay. I’m very excited that we are now able to offer our authentic Eastern Cuisine in both Rhyl and Colwyn Bay, North Wales," added Sid.

The 2010 competition will see the country divided into three regions: North, Mid & West, and South Wales. The winners of the three regional rounds will then go on to the national final and that prestigious title.

Between now and the end of January 2010 diners will be able to cast their votes to decide the top restaurants from each of the three regions by visiting www.welshcurryhouse.co.uk. The 20 short-listed restaurants will be announced on 4 February 2010.

Over the following three weeks the independent regional judges will then visit each of the 20 short-listed restaurants. The top three restaurants in Wales, one from each region, will be announced during three regional awards events:

  • Wednesday 24 Feb: North Wales
  • Thursday 25 Feb: Mid Wales
  • Friday 26 Feb: South Wales

The National judges will spend a full day visiting all three restaurants competing in the final. During the visit each restaurant will be invited to impress the judges with one of their signature dishes, available from the public menu.

The journey for the restaurants will come to an end with the three finalists being invited to the National Award Ceremony in Cardiff on 18 March 2010.
